Peat Soil

Sarawak has vast area of peat swamp. Many infrastructures and buildings built on the soils experienced severe settlement and flooding. Why ?

If you look into the structure of the soil, then you will know why. The dry materials are mainly organic such as the leaves, wood remnants, etc., and only a small fraction of inorganic materials. Before drying, the soil has moisture content between 200 to more than 2000%. In another word, the main bulk of the peat soil is water. How do you expect water and organic materials to hold the loads, whether earth filling or building loads ?
