Boulders and Cobbles

The hilly land is strewn with boulders, cobbles and stones. It is at about 45km from Sri Aman to Sarikei. This landscape reminds me of the Mars land, with many boulders, cobbles and stones too.

Such landscape often pose difficulties to provide efficient foundation for structures, whether piles or pad footings. If one footing sits on the large boulder and the other footing sits on the soil in between, then differential settlement will come in after a while, in particularly if ground water flows through regularly to the lowland. This is quite a typical underlying conditions in some rock weathering ground. If this area is overlaid by deposits through rise of sea level or even filling, the use of piles will be unpredictable and you may have to use many low capacity piles rather than few high capacity piles.
